So you want to create your own travel blog! Yay! Welcome to the club! I made a few mistakes when getting started with nicoletravels.com. Instead of learn from your own mistakes, learn from mine. Creating a blog can be done in a few easy steps. Follow this plan and you won’t go wrong!
Number One – Choose a Name You LOVE
The worst thing I did was being indecisive about my name. I actually went through 3 name changes before I settled with Nicole Travels. It’s a serious pain to transfer your website to a new domain- I had to rebuild my website 3 different times. Your name is the most important thing. It is going to be your brand, your image, maybe what draws someone in. Crank up that creative thinker you’ve got up there and come up with something unique. The easiest way to do this is to write down a bunch of words associated with what you want to do and try to combine two or three- keep it short.
Number Two – Check that it’s Available on ALL Social Media Platforms
Now that you’ve decided on a name, check that it’s available on all social media platforms! Namechekr lets you do that with a single click! I wish I knew about this website from the start… As a result of not checking first, I have crazy handles like nicole_travels, nicole.travels, and even nic0letravels. (Yep, that’s a zero.) Social media is a major way to direct traffic to your blog, don’t skip out on this step. It’s best to be consistent!
Number Three– Use WordPress
You don’t have to use WordPress… but you should. I started out using Weebly, and it was decent; I only ran into a few problems. But once I switched to WordPress, all my problems were solved. Literally. With the vast majority of the internet on WordPress, every question is basically answered with the large number of forums and chat groups. There are countless plugins via WordPress that helps you design and protect your website exactly the way you want it, too.
Number Four– Use a Good Self-Hosted Service
This is one thing I didn’t mess up! I chose Bluehost from the beginning. Building a website can be pretty straight forward when using WordPress, but sometimes something happens and you don’t know how to fix it. If and when this ever happens, call Bluehost. They will log onto your site, and show you how to fix the problem. They are there for you 24/7- and I swear they are the nicest call center ever, so friendly! Luckily, all Bluehost plans come with unlimited data! As a travel blogger, you’re going to upload a lot of pictures (hopefully), so having unlimited data is crucial!
Number Five – Choose a Theme (Layout) You LOVE
LOVE, not like. The best thing to do before you even look at themes is to look at your favorite blogs. Chose 3-5 blogs that you read and go through them individually, writing down what you like about their layout and what you don’t like. This will make building your blog a heck of a lot easier when you have a good foundation. When you’re ready, search through WordPress’ free themes! I always suggest starting with a free theme. You will definitely change your theme once or twice (or 5 times) before you getting it ‘right’.
Well, there you have it! I hope you learn from my mistakes and are able to start your blog without a hitch! Starting a blog is such a great way to share your passion with others. Ready to get started? Check to see if your domain name is available with Bluehost below, then check social media platforms with Namechekr! I want to see what you’ve created so come back and comment your URL once you are all set up! If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me! (Or your 24/7 customer service via Bluehost!)
